HCC Programs : Livelihoods and photography assignments

Livelihoods Program (for students)

Aftab started with us from a point and shoot . He then upgraded to an SLR and completed his scholarship on photography workshop . He’s also doing photography assignments for various organisations…

In Bangalore , through our exhibition we sold student prints. Not only did they learn photography but a few also adopted it to their skill set. Now we are selling prints and generating revenues…

While for mentors we aim to create a value mechanism for everyone. Our mentors are professionals with exceptional work ethics and a great eye. Hence we are now aiming at photography assignments and tying up with various folks who might need such services..

We just finished our first World Vision workshop this week and it was a revelation. We initially ran into some hiccups but the presentation was a revelation with the students speaking their mind and showcasing their work.

Many thanks to Meghna Shirish Iyer and World Vision India http://www.worldvision.in/ for their cooperation and support.

Meet the Mentor: Nishant Ratnakar

Image

I am an independent visual storyteller based in Bangalore city, India. My photography journey began as a hobby in college years when I was studying to be a software engineer. After spending a year in India’s booming IT industry, I decided to answer my true calling of being a photographer. I quit my IT job and went on a self-learning curve of being a photojournalist. Since then, I spent nearly five years working as a staff photojournalist for various publications across India including the Times group and DNA (Daily News & Analysis).

In 2008, I was selected as a participant in the young Asian Photographers workshop held as part of the Angkor Photography Festival, Cambodia. In 2010, I was awarded a full scholarship to pursue a Diploma in Photojournalism from theAsian Center For Journalism (ACFJ) at Ateneo de Manila University, Philippines. In the same year, my short-film “Err-bane truth” won the Lost lakes of Bangalore film contest organised by India Water Portal. In 2012, I was awarded the honorary mention in the Photo Story category of Media Foundation of India’s (MFI) National Press Photo Contest.

I am a firm believer in new media, and work beyond traditional platforms. As   and as a visual storyteller, I have produced several multimedia projects and short-films. I now work with a range of clients from traditional media houses, NGOs, alternate/community media, corporate, wedding and individuals, taking editorial photography & Visual Story-telling to newer avenues.

Things as they are

Quite a number of things are happening at our Club as we are trying to juggle with most of them. We have a fair bit of idea as to where it is going, but still most of it is new to us. And so we are learning in the process. It is a good feeling though at times it the chaos of new learning adds a little bit of fun and pressure.  So we have this workshop happening in Bangalore and then we have another couple lined up in Delhi and Bangalore.  Designing calendars in Delhi has been fun so far and we are excited to see the final result. In fact our printer is more excited than us. Hopefully we can do justice to pictures there.

The name of the game is execution and patience. Literally the biggest hurdle has been the website (ask anybody who has tried building one). In our excitement we ended up trying too much on it and now it looks like one complicated giant galaxy with stars and solar systems.  Next few months are super exciting for all and I guess everyone has their task cut out (including the ten plus photographers who are with us at the moment).  Anyone who wants to reach out to us and add to the chaos is welcomed to do so. Hope everyone’s good. Until then…marching right ahead
